Science Olympiad Teams Kick Off Season

West Babylon Senior High School’s Science Olympiad program proudly launched its 2025-26 season with an impressive start, competing in two major virtual tournaments. Under the leadership of head coach Andrea Durbin and assisted by Kerry Reinhart and Loretta Salerno, the program has grown to include more than 50 students across four competitive teams.
Three of the school’s teams participated in the virtual Dick Smith Memorial Invitational Tournament, while the fourth team took part in the virtual Boyceville Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament, both highly regarded competitions that draw talented Science Olympiad competitors from across the country.
Throughout the weeklong competition, students took part in 25 national-level STEM events, working in pairs and small groups to complete challenges in engineering, problem solving and scientific knowledge. This year’s build events included hovercrafts, robots, electric vehicles, boomilevers, bungee drops and helicopters. Students also tackled rigorous test-based events covering topics such as astronomy, entomology, forensics and electrical circuitry.
The virtual competitions ran daily and concluded on Dec. 8. Coaches praised students for their teamwork, dedication and enthusiasm as they prepare for the remainder of the Science Olympiad season.
